Parratah Railway Hotel

A brief history

Originally named the Oatlands Midlands Railway Hotel, this landmark opened in the 1870s to serve rail travellers between Hobart and Launceston. We’ve heard stories of luncheon orders being telegraphed ahead!

By the 1880s, the original building could no longer meet demand. A striking new wing was added — unusual for the time, as most local architecture was Georgian, while this extension was built in the Tudor Queen Anne style. It marked a bold and beautiful departure from convention, and with it came a new name: the Parattah Railway Hotel.

Interestingly, “Parattah” is an Aboriginal word meaning ice or cold — fitting, as we experience snow here most winters. It's heartening to think that even then, there was some recognition of Indigenous language and culture.

Unexpected Gallery

Step into a space where creativity and history meet.

Our gallery is housed in the former gentlemen’s billiard room at the southern end of the Parattah Railway Hotel. With tall ceilings and beautiful natural light, it’s an inspiring space for both creating and exhibiting art.
